Assigning a shift to a position creates a constant assignment on the roster for the selected Shift and Position combination. This method is used to meet constant staffing requirements. Review the following scenarios before assigning shifts to positions to determine the configuration path that fits your needs.
Rule of thumb:
Assign shifts to positions when the number of positions needed for that shift reflect your base staffing requirements:
Example 1: Suppose that Unit 1 staffs four positions on Shift A and you are required to have four people permanently assigned. When anyone of the four people transfers out of Unit 1 that vacant position must be assigned to someone else.
Example 2: Suppose that Unit 1 staffs four positions on Shift A and you are required to have four people permanently assigned. When anyone of the four people transfers out of Unit 1 that vacant position must be assigned to someone else.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply shift assignments when the number of positions needed on the Roster fluctuate on any given day
Example 3: Suppose that Unit 1 contains a position count that fluctuates. Some days twelve positions are staffed, other days eight positions are staffed. The minimum shift requirement is seven positions, this means that vacant positions on the Roster are not staffed until that area drops below the minimum requirement.
To take this example further, suppose that one of the positions in Unit 1 must be assigned at all times. When that position owner transfers out of Unit 1, this Position must be reassigned to someone else. If this is the case, select the Shift for only that Position.
